A Bit About Me

Hello and Welcome to Breebison Expressive Arts Psychotherapy.. My name is Maura and I am here to listen to you and walk with you on this journey. That may be a literal walk in one of Toronto's beautiful parks as we engage with nature to help you heal. I am a Registered Nurse and a Psychotherapist. I am licensed and professionally registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario. I practice from a strong Nature based, spiritually connected place, always keenly aware that we need to heal from wounds, be they past or present. With my 20 years of nursing experience in ICU's, critical care units in two provinces, community centres, ambulatory clinics and rural areas, I blend my neuroscience, expressive art therapy, somatic and trauma-based therapies and I see the lovely and natural connection between building strong, physical health and mental health psychotherapy. I will listen with kindness and respect your dignity.

Appointments and Payment

If you ever need to cancel an appointment, please do not hesitate to reach out and we will reschedule. Unexpected moments arrive in our lives all the time and I understand.

All sessions are 60 minutes in length and are in person appointments. The fee is $175.00. Please contact me if you would like to have one of our sliding scale appointments; I hold four of these per week.

We will schedule a short 10 to 15 minute free appointment by phone when you first contact me to decide if the type of therapy  is a good match for you. Your health is most important and reaching out takes courage! Be proud that you are taking strong steps to improve your health and to take some time for yourself.

High Park

Please join me for a nature walk in Toronto's beautiful High Park. This is a chance to connect with the trees and flowers and hopefully see a few chipmunks and swans. There is no obligation to talk, just feel free to stroll. Bring your sketchbook and a few pencils if you like and a snack and water. There are cafes close by (right across the street on Bloor Street. Tim Horton's, Second Cup and Starbucks are a few short blocks west of the park,on the North side of Bloor Street West. There is a little cafe with tables one block west of High Park on the South side of Bloor.) High Park has new rules about parking cars and none are allowed on Saturdays and Sunday. It is a chance to meet in person and there is no fee for this get together. (Free, yea! :)

If you would like to join please reply below on this site.

See you there! :)

Expressive Arts

You may not feel ready to talk very much about your experiences or concerns at present. I have found through my own therapy and by caring for others, that connecting with nature and our creative side can ease and release that stuck feeling.

Narrative Therapy

You may feel the need to voice your story without any specific therapy directed at working with your feelings on the first visit. This is where I will be present, give you my full attention and provide a safe space and active listening for you. Many people feel that this alone is a good start to therapy. We build up so much stress inside our bodies and spirits while holding onto past or present burdens.

Trauma-Focused Acceptance and Comittment Therapy

I meet all people with a trauma-aware and trauma-focused perspective. Many people we meet have lived through very trying circumstances. We can explore Trauma-Focused ACT to see if this is a therapy that would benefit you.

What are your concerns?

Grief and Loss - Loss of any kind will affect us and talking this out with a counsellor can be a tremendous release of sadness, fear, anger and other emotions and eventually, the lifting of our spirits. This may be the loss through death of a friend, family member or cherished animal. It may involve the loss of a home, a career, your health, a friendship, a business, your freedom or financial loss. It may involve divorce, estrangement from children or other relatives. You may be grieving the mental illness or brain illnesses of a loved one, wondering how you will cope with their change in personality. You need space and time to develop coping stategies. You deserve gentleness and time to sit with your grief.

Illness - A new or chronic illness poses challenges for us all. Hospitalizations, tests, speaking with health professionals and navigating the health care system can be daunting. I have extensive experience in caring for people in Intensive Care Units, critical and acute care and community care in both large cities and rural farmlands. I understand from a Registered Nurse's perspective and from a relatives and patients perspective.
Childhood Trauma-If you are just realizing that you were not treated kindly and neglected as a child, or have known this truth for some time, I am here to listen. We can use expressive art therapy and have nature assist in your healing if this resonates with you. Perhaps you need to voice your story. This is a grief journey and will require time to restore your life balance. Life can be better for you. You deserve to be heard and to find joy in the everyday.

These are only a few of the frequent concerns that people face. There are many more. You may be facing challenges about safety, coping with unexpected changes, prejudice, judgement or harassment. I am here to listen. I can also help you find  other professionals and agencies that may be able to offer assistance.
